Lots of people stressed and lots doing the right thing seeing their psychologist and doctors…

Unfortunately lots of things are wrong in the current paradigm of health care (actually it’s sick care). We (as a collective) come up with names for many health conditions e.g. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Cushing’s Syndrome, Guillain-Barré syndrome etc…then are swayed (human biases) by Big Pharma toward dishing pills…all the while forgetting traditional treatments that have proven to work
Nothing more exciting and murkier than the field of psychology and mental health. Scripts for antidepressants are like 2nd only to cardiovascular and cancer drugs. Yet 50% of them DO NOT work…why? Each of us is unique, responding differently to each brand. More importantly though, it’s a Band-Aid approach to the root problems: social disharmony e.g. divorce, break-up, living in a new country alone, stress e.g. working over-time, shift-work, nutritional e.g. lack of protein (amino acids, B6, B12, folate for neurotransmitters), plants (magnesium for calming stress), exercise e.g. sluggish mitochondria (energy factories) etc…
It appears people give lip service to the diet, exercise, meditation bandwagon…yet it’s the core. Take exercise: physiology affects psychology…..sitting in a shitty chair #WFM doesn’t help – doing periodic star jumps every 60mins is guaranteed to lift mood. Supplements like St John’s Wort, Rhodiola, Vitamin D, Turmeric, sAME, B6, B12, MTHF….all proven to improve mood and anxiety….easily sourced naturally from diet (except the flowering types of course)
Pharmacists have a wonderful role, as the buck really can stop with us. But respecting the right of patients is just as important too. And so is our duty of care to inform patients of alternatives that may be safer and just as effective.
PS. We’re just unpacking the syndrome called long COVID. Syndrome because we don’t exactly know why it occurs…but collestation of symptoms include: fatigue, brain fog, weird bodily sensations like “vibrations”, and of course taste and small changes. Along with it is….anxiety and depression. If you spot these, speak to a professional.
